It’s commonplace to see RISD architecture students construct make-shift, 2x4 lumber shelves above their workbenches at the beginning of the semester. It effectively achieves additional vertical storage and the appearance of  “nesting,” meaning you plan on being at your desk A LOT.

It wasn’t until my desk mate Megan Holzrichter had considered whipping one up that I started to seriously consider the merit of having one. Making a shelf at this stage of a thesis project may seem like a low priority and late game gameplay.


Like her, I realized I actually needed more storage. But it was also a comfortable way to exercise my basic skills.

Being Spring Break, I scoured campus. And belatedly remembered that woodshops, Second Life, and most academic buildings were on hiatus. So the project became a mission to
